Greatest Spurt in Spread of "Flu" Epidemic Is Reported From Surgeon General's Office

• Associated Press, Washington, October 5—• 17,383 new cases have developed in army camps. This is an increase of 4,408 from the previous 24 hours. 2,141 new cases of pneumonia have developed, an increase of 287 over the previous day.• There were 653 deaths in the camps, an increase of 390 over the previous 24 hours.• Camp Taylor, KY, reported the greatest number of new cases with 1,578, and also reported 268 new cases of pneumonia and 40 deaths.• The illness is believed to be subsiding at Camp Sherman, OH, with 580 new illnesses as compared to over 1,000 the previous 24 hours, and 53 deaths.• Camp Meade reported 1,644 new cases of influenza, 329 cases of pneumonia, and 45 deaths for 24 hours previous. A decline has also occurred at Camp Funston, which reported 943 cases as opposed to 1,276 the previous day.• The Red Cross received information that many of the nurses sent there previously could be reassigned. The Red Cross has announced that Canadian nurses will be retained for U.S. service. The Canadian Committee hopes to send 800 (?) graduate nurses to Boston and 25 to Washington.
